The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Teens are getting the message about leading healthier lifestyles. In a CDC study of 13,000 high school students, fewer teens were smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol or soda and less were engaging in risky sexual behavior. Fighting at school has decreased but this may be due to increased security.
Teens continue to spend too much time with electronic devices. A sharp increase was seen in just the past three years….rising from 31% in 2011 to 41% today. That means less time is being spent reading, exercising, homework, socializing face to face and other activities.
About 34% of teens are sexually active. Condom use for this group remained about the same at 60%. So parents, if your teens haven’t had their HPV vaccines, you may want to reconsider.
Suicide attempts remained steady at around 8%.
Bad habits that are on the rise are e-cigarettes, marijuana use and texting while driving.
Good habits such as using bike helmets and seat belts have increased.
So while we still have a ways to go but our young people are getting the message.
